CrossGen Comics was a comic book publisher founded in 1998 by entrepreneur Mark Alessi. It gained attention for its ambitious and interconnected comic book universe, known as the “CrossGen Universe.” The company aimed to create a shared universe of titles that were interconnected through a concept called the “Sigilverse,” where characters from different genres and backgrounds were linked by a mysterious symbol known as the Sigil.
CrossGen focused on a variety of genres, including fantasy, science fiction, horror, and more, with the intention of attracting a diverse range of readers. Some of their notable titles included:
Sigil: This was the flagship title of CrossGen, focusing on the character Samandahl “Sam” Rey, who possessed the Sigil. The Sigil granted the bearer unique abilities and was the central element linking many of the other titles in the CrossGen Universe.
Mystic: This series revolved around the character Giselle Villard, a young woman with the power to control the forces of nature.
Scion: Following the story of Ethan, the last heir of a fallen empire, Scion blended elements of science fiction and fantasy.
Sojourn: This fantasy series followed the adventures of Arwyn, a young archer on a quest to save her realm.
The First: Combining elements of superhero fiction and mythology, The First featured heroes imbued with god-like powers.
Negation: A science fiction series that focused on a group of individuals from various dimensions who were brought together in a mysterious prison-like realm known as the Negation.
Ruse: This series featured Simon Archard, a detective with a keen intellect, and his partner Emma Bishop, as they solved supernatural mysteries in a Victorian-era setting.
CrossGen’s interconnected storytelling approach was both innovative and challenging. However, the company faced financial difficulties, including high printing costs and an overextended publishing schedule. These issues eventually led to its downfall. In 2004, CrossGen filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and was subsequently purchased by The Walt Disney Company.
Despite its relatively short-lived existence, CrossGen Comics left a mark on the comic book industry with its unique approach to storytelling and its attempt to create a shared universe outside of the major players in the industry at the time.
